Meet Jack, our tough guy in black!

Jack spent his life as a park cat in Osaka, getting by alone against the odds. Some visiting tourists spotted him looking clearly unwell and hungry and reported him, and we arranged for our partners at Nekokaramesen to go to the park. They were able to catch Jack, along with four kittens.

Jack was neutered and started on antibiotics, then came to our shelter to recover. He had clearly been struggling for a long time. He tested negative for FIV and FeLV right after trapping, but a later test came back FIV positive, which can happen when the virus is still incubating at the time of capture.

His recovery has been slow. Jack has had ongoing upper respiratory symptoms and eye problems, and after trying several treatments, nebulizer therapy has worked best, with the help of a special hands-off setup one of our team invented. In September 2026 our vet noticed worrying pressure in his eyes, so he has seen an eye specialist in Tokyo and may need a CT scan to check for neurological issues. For now he is recovering in a temporary foster home.

Jack is a little spicy, and he might not win you over in the first five minutes. But a cat who has fought this hard deserves someone in his corner. If you'd like to help Jack, by adopting, fostering, or sponsoring his care, please get in touch.
